Rep. Don Bacon, a centrist Republican in Nebraska, is making ready to announce his retirement from Congress.

Bacon’s retirement from Congress creates a ripe alternative for Democrats to win the Home seat representing Bacon’s Omaha district.

In an election cycle the place the Home majority could possibly be determined by only one or two seats, Democrats might want to flip a number of Republican-held seats just like the one in Nebraska’s 2nd District.

With Bacon out, the GOP now not has an incumbent benefit.

The formal announcement might come as early as subsequent week, NBC reported on Friday evening. NOTUS and Punchbowl News first reported Bacon’s plans, which aren’t surprising.

A spokesperson for Bacon didn’t instantly reply to CNBC’s request for remark Saturday morning.

Treasury Sec. Bessent: Will be up to Pres. Trump on whether July 9 tariff deadline is flexible

Bacon represents a key battleground district for Nebraska, which incorporates most of Omaha.

Former Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris received Bacon’s district by nearly 5 percentage points in 2024, and former President Joe Biden carried Bacon’s district by a bigger margin in 2020.

Bacon is without doubt one of the few congressional Republicans who’ve been brazenly important of President Donald Trump.
