Individuals are marking the beginning of the winter and summer solstices throughout the globe. North of the equator, celebrations welcome summer season, whereas these within the south observe the start of winter.
In Romania, dancers carrying crowns of wheat gathered for the Sanziene, or “Fairies,” a pre-Christian, pagan celebration in honor of the tiny, imaginary winged beings who come to earth as an emblem of fertility. In the meantime, Lithuanians danced within the small city of Kernave and Russians lit bonfires.
Within the U.S., a performer danced throughout the colours of Christopher Janey’s “Passing Mild” photo voltaic sculpture that aligns every Summer season Solstice on the San Antonio airport. In Spain, individuals watched the solar rise on a Barcelona seashore, coined “The Night time of San Juan.”
South of the equator in Bolivia, Indigenous individuals gathered round fires and held up their palms to obtain the primary rays of daylight in celebration of the Andean New Year of 5533, marking the Southern Hemisphere’s winter solstice.
