Within the latter half of the nineteenth century, Europe was dazzled by the sweetness, appeal and sensibility of two empresses: Eugénie, Empress of the French through her marriage to Napoleon III; and Elisabeth (or ‘Sisi’), consort to the Austrian emperor, Franz Joseph.
