The U.S. Education Department stated Wednesday that Columbia University has failed to fulfill the requirements for accreditation as a result of it “is in violation of federal antidiscrimination legal guidelines” for allegedly tolerating harassment of Jewish college students on campus.
The Schooling Division’s Workplace of Civil Rights notified the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, an accrediting establishment that Columbia belongs to, of the alleged violation.
The division famous that federal laws, “accreditors are required to inform any member establishment a couple of federal noncompliance discovering and set up a plan to return into compliance.”
“If a college fails to return into compliance inside a specified interval, an accreditor should take acceptable motion in opposition to its member establishment,” the division stated.
Schooling Secretary Linda McMahon, in a press release, stated, “After Hamas’ October 7, 2023, terror assault on Israel, Columbia College’s management acted with deliberate indifference in direction of the harassment of Jewish college students on its campus.”
“This isn’t solely immoral, but in addition illegal,” McMahon stated.
“Accreditors have an unlimited public accountability as gatekeepers of federal scholar support. They decide which establishments are eligible for federal scholar loans and Pell Grants.
